On the 11th of November 2022, an sod-turning ceremony for the KZN Rebuild Intervention Project was held in KwaMakhutha, KZN. The project is a collaboration between the Collen Mashawana Foundation. It is an initiative that aims to assist with the reconstruction of 80 houses for those who lost their homes and were left in destitute following the devastating KZN floods in April 2022.
Following a commitment made by Mr Collen Mashawana 5 weeks ago, CMF and Old Mutual Foundation handed over 3 beautiful and safe homes to 3 families who were victims of the flood. The homes were handed over fully furnished with electricity and water.
The first family belongs to Gogo Nontlatla Ndlovu who had her leg amputated after her house collapsed on her during the heavy downpour. She lived with her grandchildren and the family had to rent a room from a neighbour.
The second family is of Gogo Sihle Kunene ,who lives with her 32 years old twin daughters who are living with a mental disorder. Their house was also washed away by the floods and they were forced to move into a temporary structure for shelter.
The Mbonambi is a family of nine whose home was also destroyed by the floods and none of the family members are employed.
The project is part of our efforts to restore the dignity of the flood victims and we are In gratitude to Old Mutual Foundation and all our other partners who are committed towards responding to the needs of the various communities who have been rendered vulnerable.
