The Collen Mashawana Foundation paid a visit to Cillie Village in Kimberly to assess the living conditions of the Coetzee family on the 7th of June 2022.

The family of 9 live in a dilapidated 2-room shack in Cillie Village, all of whom survive on a household income of a mere R4400.

The family consists of Oupa Dirk(60’s), Esmerelda (40), Fiona (36) and 6 children between the ages of 2-14years old.

Even though Kimberly is worldly known for producing diamonds, where the first stock exchange in Africa was built and was the initial hub of industrialization in South Africa, many in the Northern Cape live below the poverty line.

As a Foundation, we believe that everyone has the right to safe and decent housing. Shelter is a basic human need that is crucial for survival and our aim for the Coetzee family is to provide adequate housing and the opportunity for them to lead a normal life.
