Demography gives us an awareness of the fact that we live in increasingly aging populations. In South Africa, the growth rate among the elderly (60 years and older) rose from 1,1% for the period 2002–2003 to 3,0% for the period 2019–2020. Vulnerabilities evident in this age group range from the need for social assistance programmes and easy access to cash transfers to food programmes and access to health care. With the challenge of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, we need to focus our attention on protecting our elderly.
The Vakhoma Home for The Frail Older Persons is an NPO founded in 2008 by community members of Chiawelo with the objective of looking after older persons who were found homeless, raped or abused. The center currently houses more than 56 elderly persons with 6 Caregivers. The Collen Mashawana Foundation adopted the home in 2017 and alongside Afribiz Invest we refurbished their dining hall in 2018 as one of our many social welfare development projects.
This program was initiated to show our care for the elderly and the importance of doing so for all of us concerned. In doing so we have identified partners around South Africa, such as the Vakhoma Home for The Frail Older Persons that work at the grassroots level in some of the most underdeveloped regions, towards realising various welfare goals.
ACHIEVED: More elderly of the Vakhamo Home for The Elderly are in better quality provision than before. However, much still remains to be done before we can say with confidence that the needs of the elderly are being met.
